Many of our pieces have additional parts that cannot be fired. These parts (bank stoppers, frame backs, hangers, etc) live in the black "post-fire" box that correlated with the assigned day until pieces have been fired. When we're unloading the kiln, we're checking every piece to make sure it gets "finished" with the piece in the post fire box. If there's a part or piece in the box, it belongs to an item from the corresponding kiln load. As such, you should never have left over parts or pieces.
Lots of items are common sense - stoppers go in banks, travel lids go with travel tumblers, canister gaskets go with canisters - but we do get new and rotating items so be sure to pay special attention to what goes where.
Here are some examples of the most common items that need finishing pieces:
Travel Mugs - Lids
Ornaments - Twine
Plaques - Silver Wire
Soap Dispenser - Soap Pump
Canisters - Gasket
Banks - Stoppers
Frames - Glass & Backs
Large Christmas Trees - Plug in Lights
3" Letters - Colored Wire
*** pick the right size and number of magnets
*** test which side sticks to metal; add a dot of E6000 to the opposite side
*** tape it down with masking tape or clip
*** let cure for 24 hours—and voilà, you’ve got a fridge-worthy masterpiece!
To finish a photo frame after firing, place the glass inside and make sure it’s facing the right direction. Peel off any sticker backs. Add a thin line of E6000 on all four sides, pop in the backing, then clip each corner and the middle of each edge. Let it cure for 24 hours and you’re all set!
Use colored wire to attach 3" letters together and/or create a top loop for hanging. Use the end of a small brush to twist the ends up into curls.
When a customer takes an item to go, we typically hold their extra parts and pieces in a box labeled "out box" (as in, the bisque is out of the studio) in the kiln room until it is returned for firing. Should a guest wish to take their extra parts home with the bisque, we make a note of that on their ticket so we don't accidentally give out extra stoppers, lids, etc.
