Glaze is GLASS! Or very close to being glass. Glazes are reactive, meaning that when fired the glass melts and allows for movement in the piece. As the glass melts, it fills any grooves on the surface of the piece coating it with a glass like layer which makes the piece suitable for all purposes! For us, we have crystal and pottery glazes which we call "specialty glazes".
**Because glazes will move when fired, it is not recommended to design on top of glazes as your design will be unpredictable once fired.
Underglaze is CLAY! Underglaze is closer to an oxide in chemical composition and is basically pure organic material or COLOR! Underglazes are non-reactive, meaning they do not move when fired. Underglazes might fire shiny, but are not *technically* food safe as they do not contain enough frit to create that glass seal.
Our undercoats or stable glazes are really something between an underglaze and a glaze. They are food safe all on their own with 3 or more coats of coverage but not all designs or experience levels allow for "full" color coverage. So, we clear dip everything painted with our "stable" glazes just to be safe.
Non-Food Safe Glaze! These glazes are practically magic! Crystals of organic material melt during the firing process and help the glaze move to create cool textures and designs! These glazes fire glossy but are not recommended for food surfaces since textured surfaces can trap food/bacteria and be difficult to clean.
Food Safe Glaze! For the most part! Any pottery glaze that fires shiny and smooth is food safe; those that fire textured are not food safe. Colors number 9529-9536 are non-reactive glazes and will stay put when fired, the rest of the colors are reactive so it is not suggested to design on top of a reactive pottery glaze.
Clear glaze that typically seals our pieces, makes them food safe, and helps produce that beautiful shine! Our clear glaze is dyed mint for easy finger sanding and unmistakable results. As it heats up in the kiln, the dye will burn out of our clear glaze (which helps us to know if we are experiencing any firing issues) and leave behind a beautiful clear, glass like finish!
Glazes designed specifically to fit our stoneware line. Stoneware fires at ^6 which is about 500F hotter than our ^06 work. Stoneware glazes are meant to be "organic" in feel and can be used to create a variety of flowing designs.
A food-safe glaze meant to be used as an accent color. It should be the very last thing you add to your piece and can be clear dipped. Glow glaze fires to ^06 and will fire out at higher temps but can be added on as a 3rd firing/"overglaze" to stoneware.
CUSTOMER NEED TO KNOWS:
***A little goes a long way, as such we will scoop up to one "well" of glow glaze into the paint palette at a time.
***Glow glaze has small pieces of grit in it that create the glow. When a guest is using glow glaze, we want to be sure they know to mix up the color frequently with the bottom of a brush so that those little crystals don't fall to the bottom and prevent the effect from forming.
We tend to rotate in limited time or seasonal offerings such as glitter glaze, cobblestone, and glow in the dark glaze.
